Beauty and hair care during pregnancy

There are not too many pregnancy products for expectant mothers on the market, but pregnant women have completely different and often new care needs. During pregnancy, your body undergoes extreme changes and is put to the test.

From women who love the feeling of pregnancy to women who no longer feel comfortable in their skin, there is everything. It is important to caress not only the skin but also the soul with your body care and to trigger a feeling of well-being. Because a happy mummy is also good for the child in the womb. The changes are unpredictable and can lead to you having to completely change both hair and skin care. Stay flexible and respond to your body's new needs.

We'll give you tips on how to best manage your body's changes and recommend products that will enhance your pregnancy.

Hair

Hair care

During pregnancy, your hair usually becomes lusher and shinier. You have probably never had such full and strong hair as during pregnancy. This is caused by the female sex hormone oestrogen, which extends the life phase of each hair and therefore makes the hair fall out much later. When hair stays on your head longer, it is also more stressed and strained by various environmental influences. Even hair that is already damaged does not fall out and can look dull. Consequently, your hair needs more care. After childbirth, the hair gained through pregnancy falls out, which leads to increased hair loss. Increased oestrogen levels increase sebum production in some women, which can lead to greasier hair.

Our tip: In addition to your hair care routine, use a protective leave-in product for the ends of your hair to restore shine to damaged hair. If you have particularly oily hair during pregnancy, we recommend washing it regularly with a mild shampoo. Do not use products that weigh your hair down. Whenever possible, avoid blow-drying your hair and let it air dry. The blow-drying air stimulates the sebaceous glands. Also avoid excessive hair brushing.

Dye your hair

Whether or not you are allowed to dye your hair during pregnancy has not yet been investigated in any study. In principle, it is recommended that you do not dye your hair with chemicals. However, even pregnant hairdressers are allowed to continue working. This has been closely examined with regard to the Maternity Protection Act. The danger posed by the substances is considered to be low due to their dosage.

Our tip: For a colour refresh, use gentle colours such as tints or plant-based colours. Or switch to mèche, these hardly come into contact with the scalp thanks to the foils.

More melanin

Did you know that you produce more melanin during pregnancy? This causes pregnant women to tan more quickly - nipples, moles and freckles become darker. Pregnant women also become more sensitive to light and therefore have an increased risk of sunburn. This can also cause pigmentation spots - also known as pregnancy spots. Melanin is also responsible for the development of the Linea Negra, the dark line between the pubic bone and the belly button.

Our tip: Use a day cream with a sun protection factor and make sure you wear adequate sun protection when you are outdoors.

Increased oestrogen level

Due to the increase in oestrogen levels, water is deposited in the tissue. This leads to fewer wrinkles and rosy skin. Due to better blood circulation, some women have fewer skin blemishes. In other women, however, the hormone high leads to more blackheads and pimples due to the increased production of the sebaceous and sweat glands. Expectant mothers who were already prone to acne before pregnancy are more likely to have worse skin. The positive news: after the first three months, the hormonal balance has adjusted and the skin should improve again.

Belly care

During pregnancy, the hormone balance changes the body's own collagen. This leads to stretch marks - once they appear, they unfortunately remain for life. Whether or not you get stretch marks during pregnancy is down to your genetic make-up. Because younger women tend to have firmer tissues, their skin is more prone to cracking. The skin of women over 35 can handle the stretching of pregnancy better.

You can use body oils and creams to prevent stretch marks and help the skin stay streak-free. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this will happen, even if you use a lot of care. However, with the help of creams and oils, the skin certainly becomes more elastic and is prepared for the strong stretching. From the sixth month onwards, feelings of tension and itching may appear on the abdomen. Creams and oils can help here too.

Our tip against stretch marks: At the beginning of your pregnancy, start applying cream or oil to your belly regularly to prevent stretch marks. Discipline is needed here. We recommend creaming your belly at least twice a day. Your baby will certainly thank you for it and will be happy about a nice massage. You can also take alternating showers from the 3rd month, which strengthens the connective tissue. We also recommend peelings. Peelings promote blood circulation and thus minimise or prevent stretch marks.

Breast care

The rapid growth of the breasts can often cause stretch marks here too.

Our tip: Apply as much cream and oil as possible to this area of the skin to supply it with moisture and nutrients. To stimulate blood circulation, gently massage the product into the skin with circular movements. Alternating showers are also good for improving blood circulation and thus tightening the skin. After breastfeeding, you can also use firming creams. We recommend the following products.

Leg care

Due to your higher oestrogen levels during pregnancy, water retention in the legs, loosening of the connective tissue and vein dilatation occur. Depending on your predisposition, this can lead to varicose veins. Especially towards the end of pregnancy, the legs are under a lot of strain.

Our tip: Wear compression stockings and get plenty of exercise. If possible, you should also avoid sitting or standing. Raise your legs a lot and don't wear high heels. Foot and calf massages as well as foot baths are a real relief for soon-to-be mums. If your legs hurt, you can use cooling gels and creams.

Hair removal

Due to the higher oestrogen balance, hair growth will be less and your skin will be softer. Refrain from using depilatory creams during pregnancy. The chemical substances they contain can be harmful to the baby. Laser treatments are also taboo during pregnancy.

Our tip: Instead of using a depilatory cream, we recommend shaving, epilating or waxing or sugaring your hair.

Bath and sauna

A hot bath increases your core body temperature. From 39°C, hyperthermia (excess temperature) can occur in the child, which is suspected of causing malformations in the first few months.

The situation is different when taking a sauna. Here, the body can better influence the temperature through sweating. However, the sauna sessions should be short, as the circulation is more unstable from the 12th week of pregnancy onwards. After the sauna, you need a long cooling-off period. Also, move around a lot and do not take a cold bath afterwards. This puts too much strain on you and the baby. Drink enough water afterwards.

Our tip: If you like to bathe warmer than 38°C, you should do so for no more than five to ten minutes and only immerse half of your body. We recommend avoiding hot baths for the first three months and getting used to body temperature water.

Nutrition and sport

It is a well-known fact that beauty comes from within. This is also true during pregnancy. Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. Plenty of vegetables and high-quality proteins make your skin glow and provide you and the baby with the most important nutrients.

Exercise is also important during pregnancy. Especially if you did a lot of sport before pregnancy, you should not stop. However, avoid jumping, martial arts and too heavy strength exercises. Fitness trainers or doctors will be happy to tell you what is possible for you as a pregnant woman.

Beauty products during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Basically, the more natural the beauty products, the better for the child and for you. Above all, you should avoid preservatives whenever possible, as they can impair the development and reproductive ability of the child.

You should also avoid retinol, salicylic acid and fruit acids in high concentrations. These ingredients can harm the baby or induce labour.
