Who doesn't dream of a frizz-free mane full of suppleness and smoothness? Thanks to keratin straightening, this is no longer a dream. But how do you properly care for your hair after such a treatment so that the result lasts even longer? Find out the most important tips and tricks for care after a keratin treatment.

If you've ever thought about keratin treatment, you've probably wondered how your hair will react to it.

Can you dye, straighten, curl and wash it as normal after such a treatment and what effects do different styling methods have on the treated head?

The fact is, your hair undergoes a chemical treatment and should therefore be cared for properly and with care afterwards.

To ensure that the treatment is worthwhile and the results achieved last for a long time, it is important to use the right products after the treatment.

Incorrect post-treatment can lead to the keratin washing out faster than desired and the result only lasting a few weeks instead of up to five months.

Immediately after a keratin treatment

One of the most important points is probably not to wash your hair for the next 48 hours after the keratin treatment in the salon. If possible, avoid using hair ties and any other accessories that could cause pressure points.

The keratin needs some time to bind in the hair - the fewer disruptive factors, the better! Also make sure you don't get caught in a thunderstorm, as this kind of wetness is not good for the fresh keratin either.

It's actually quite simple; make sure the hair stays exactly the same for the next 48 hours after a keratin treatment as it was after the salon visit. The time immediately after the treatment is essential for the success of the new hairstyle.

The care at home

When choosing products for care afterwards, it is essential to ensure that they do not contain salt - also called sodium chloride. Chlorinated and saline water should also be avoided as much as possible, as this all helps to wash out the keratin more quickly.

After you have received the treatment from the salon and wash your hair for the first time back at home, it is advised to stretch the hair again with a straightening iron. If you do this after the first two or three hair washes, the effect of the keratin treatment should be enhanced and the smoothness should last even longer. However, be careful if the result has turned out a bit too flat for you. In this case, you should no longer reach for the straightening iron and generally not overdo it when it comes to maintaining the smoothness with your own straightening iron.

There are many shampoos and hair treatments specifically designed for keratin-treated hair. It is quite normal for the keratin to slowly wash out, but with the right products this can be minimized, keeping the hair straight for longer. It is very important to use shampoos that do not contain silicones, salts or alcohol. It is best to ask your hairdresser right away and get personal advice so that your keratin treatment is also a complete success.

But you should definitely make sure that you use products that contain keratin. This way, some keratin is replenished again and again and the treated hair also receives suitable care. For example, reach for our keratin tip, the Keratin Complex - Infusion - a specially developed serum for keratin-treated hair.

Be sure to match your complete care routine to the needs of your hair. Don't just use shampoo and conditioner, pamper your hair with a little extra care and an at-home keratin treatment. Find our favorites from each category here:

What to look for after a keratin treatment:

  1. Do not wash hair for 48 hours and if possible do not tie it up
  2. Avoid products with sodium chloride, alcohol and sulfates
  3. Wait at least two weeks before coloring your hair
  4. Be sure to avoid hair dye containing ammonia
  5. Do not over wash the hair so that the keratin does not wash out
  6. Intensively care for hair even after treatment
  7. Use products containing keratin
  8. Regularly do hair treatments and masks, so that the result is maintained longer

So what is the right care after keratin treatment?

A keratin treatment for the hair brings only advantages; smooth and frizz-free, minimized styling time and not to forget: the hair gets an incredible shine.

However, as with all treatments, the better the care afterwards, the better and longer-lasting the result. However, there is no magic formula for the right aftercare. However, if you follow the tips and tricks mentioned above, the newfound suppleness, smoothness and shine should last a long time and unfold its full potential.
