Can you over-care for your hair?

PerfectHair.ch Redaktion01.02.2022
blog

We all know the desire for beautiful hair that is healthy, well-groomed, shiny and speaks for itself. But with all the desire for perfect hair, you have to realise one thing: Less is sometimes more.

More care does not always mean more beautiful hair. Does your hair sometimes look flat? Curls without bounce? It may well be that the cause lies in over-caring for your hair. But when is hair considered "over-processed" and how do you recognise this? Our expert hairstylists from the salon can help. They tell us what over-processed hair is all about, how you can recognise it yourself and what you can do about it.

Interview with Expert Hairstylists

Have you ever experienced this? Have you just showered and put your hair through an intensive care routine and it's already greasy again? Then it's only natural to wonder whether your hair has been over-processed. But is that really the problem or is the product simply the wrong one? Find out now:

How can you recognise over-groomed hair?

There are several signs that clearly speak in favour of over-nourishment:

  • Quickly greasy hair, as if it was greasier after showering than before
  • Hair that lies limp, in the best case still lacking lustre and strength
  • Very unruly hair that just won't be tamed
  • Itchy scalp
  • Sudden onset of dandruff

But we must not forget that the scalp and the structure of the hair are individual and can only be assessed with difficulty by remote diagnosis. The safest way to find out if your hair is over-processed is to visit your hairdresser.

Thanks to a hair analysis and a consultation tailored to the respective needs, we can provide customers with optimal advice and recommend products within a very short time.

What are the reasons for over-grooming hair?

As is so often the case, there are various reasons for over-care and here, too, you need to keep an eye on your own hair structure. Very fine hair that has not been coloured or otherwise chemically treated generally tends to be over-processed quickly.

We generally say that the following points on a product basis lead to the hair receiving too much product:

Silicones and glycerine are found in many shampoos and conditioners and, in small amounts, clearly also make for shiny, silky-soft hair. In larger quantities, however, these little helpers tend to dry out the hair and at the same time weigh it down, leaving it barely able to breathe.

Conditioners, masks and leave-in products, just like shampoo, can lead to oversaturation. A greasy root or generally greasy hair, for example, are signs that the products have either not been rinsed out thoroughly enough or that there was simply too much product.

We've all been there: the shampoo doesn't lather properly and then you simply wash it twice or use more of it, preferably in combination with hot water. But be careful, a shampoo should be used to clean the hair, not to care for it. If the product has been massaged well into the scalp, one wash is usually sufficient. It is often enough just to massage the shampoo onto the scalp, as this cleanses the lengths and ends sufficiently.

Oversaturation of ingredients: You've found your absolute favourite oil that gives your hair a wonderful shine and smells great at the same time. But suddenly your hair just looks greasy and dull? Then this is most likely due to oversaturation. Put simply, this means that your hair has absorbed so much of the valuable ingredients that it can no longer process new ones.

What do you recommend for over-processed hair?

Now it's time for a deep cleanse or, in other words, a hair detox! All care and styling residues must be removed from the hair. The scalp, lengths and ends should be deep cleansed with special products.

I would recommend using deep cleansing products for at least one to two weeks. However, you must ensure that the products do not contain any water-soluble silicones - I can highly recommend the products from Authentic Beauty Concept. We also always advise that you should only wash your hair once or twice a week, but you can also use a dry shampoo to bridge the gap if your hair is over-processed.

Why is this so important?

The why has already been answered. Over-processed hair is in a vicious circle and the only way out is to detox your hair. With this step-by-step guide, you can break this vicious cycle by ridding your scalp and hair of dirt and product residue for good.

Step 1: Exfoliate the scalp

Where is residue often deposited first? That's right, on the scalp. Many people know the result: the skin can no longer really breathe, let alone really absorb care. Use a cleansing detox scrub to remove any particles and residues:

Step 2: Remove dirt and product residue from lengths and ends

Deep cleansing is the order of the day! Special shampoos that are fully dedicated to deep cleansing come into their own. Silicones and other residues are gently but effectively banished from the scalp, lengths and ends. Hair stylists' favourite for residue-free cleansing is and remains AUTHENTIC BEAUTY CONCEPT - Deep Cleansing Shampoo!

Step 3: Don't forget to care

Now that all residue has been banished from the hair, it still needs to be moisturised. The deep-cleansing products have slightly roughened the scalp and hair, so moisturising is essential now! We recommend using natural products here so that you don't have to moisturise your hair with synthetic ingredients straight away.

How much care would be right?

As is so often the case, this question cannot be answered rigorously. As we briefly mentioned above, the ideal hair care product is and always will be dependent on your own hair needs, which of course vary from person to person.

If you have very dry hair and perhaps even dry skin, you should definitely use moisturising care. However, women and men with hair that greases quickly should have a care routine that regulates the scalp's sebum production. Pro tip for the perfect routine: whenever possible, use matching products from the same brand or line, as these are always tailored to a specific need and coordinated with each other.

What do you say if the customer wants to have their hair greased?

It can be an alternative to deep-cleaning products, but you need a lot of patience for this project. However, if you are confident and have enough nerve, you should definitely do it. The scalp's natural protective layer can regenerate optimally and at the same time any dirt is removed from the hair.

Back to (dream) hair

As you can see, over-groomed hair doesn't have to be a nightmare, or stay that way. Take your time and make sure your hair finds its way back to its natural texture. Your hair will thank you for it. And if you're unsure, take the chance now and make an appointment with our expert hairstylists.
