You want a casual granny blonde or a beautiful beach blonde and you want to do it without damaging your hair during the bleaching process? It is possible! Read the 8 best tips here.

Blonde hair is beautiful, but often difficult to achieve. Many fear the damage that bleaching can cause and avoid it. However, a beautiful shade of blonde is easy to achieve without damaging your hair if you have enough patience and follow our tips. I used to work as a hairstylist myself and know the pitfalls of bleaching. In this post, I will show you what the most common mistakes are and how you can avoid them.

1. Do not wash before bleaching

How often did clients used to come into the salon and say, beaming, "I washed my hair at home, so you don't have to do this anymore". Before bleaching, this is fatal, because washed hair is much more sensitive and the scalp is also less well protected.

Therefore, I advise you not to wash your hair before going to the hairdresser, even if it is no longer fresh. Hairdressers have no problem with this and prefer to judge for themselves whether it is necessary to wash the hair or not. With tints, for example, a thorough hair wash is necessary before application. Not with bleaching.

2. Take care of your scalp

Not only the hair but also the scalp can suffer from the bleaching process. It is therefore important to treat your scalp properly before and after the bleaching process. Anyway, the scalp is often neglected in hair care. The tips are nurtured and cared for, but the new hair actually sprouts from the scalp. It should therefore be healthy!

The L'Anza Healing Remedy Scalp Balancing Treatment is a lasting and effective treatment for dandruff. It cares for and controls oily, dry and sensitive scalps. The natural ingredients such as papaya extract, shiso mint, coconut water and lavender oil have a balancing, soothing, refreshing, moisturising and nourishing effect. They reduce sebum production, are anti-itching and inhibit microbial activities.

3. Olaplex - the miracle product

Surely you have already heard of Olaplex. Is this miracle product really that good? I have had extremely good experiences with it. Even though Olaplex certainly doesn't allow you to bleach from black to platinum in a few hours - it is definitely the best remedy against hair breakage during bleaching. Be sure to use the at-home aftercare as well. If your hair is already damaged from bleaching, Olaplex No. 3 can help you repair the damage.

Always ask your hairdresser about Olaplex when bleaching. Of course, systems like K18 are also recommended, they are based on the same principle.

4. Distinguish toning, colouring and bleaching

I was often shocked in the salon how many people don't know the difference between tinting, colouring and bleaching. Sure, it's actually the hairdresser's job to choose the right product. And yet it is useful to know at least the biggest differences. It helps to choose the right hair colour and you can better assess how hard your hair will suffer from the new hair colour.

Toning

When toning, the colour pigments are placed around the hair. The colour does not penetrate the hair at all or only a little. Thus, toning is not harmful to the hair at all. Toning is the gentlest hair colouring technique. Toning can only dye the hair darker. Lighter shades are not possible and grey hair is not covered.

Colouring

Hair dyes or colourations penetrate the hair and change the pigments. With a hair colour, grey hair is covered and the hair can be coloured darker as well as lighter. Hair dyes can only be used on natural hair. If your hair is already coloured and you want it to become lighter, it is necessary to resort to bleaching.

Bleaching

Bleaching draws the artificial and natural pigments out of the hair and lightens it. So if you already have coloured hair or want to lighten your hair by more than 4 levels, you need to have your hair bleached. Bleached hair is depigmented hair and not hair colour in that sense. You should therefore insist that your hairdresser always tints the freshly bleached hair with a tint. This is the only way to achieve a beautiful blonde shade.

5. Slow and steady

When things have to go too fast, the hair always suffers. The best tips cannot help if you aim to lighten the hair too quickly. Hair colours are classified on a colour scale of 1-10. 1 is black and 10 and lighter are shades of blonde. You should never lighten more than 5-6 levels when bleaching, even with Olaplex. This is the only way to maintain hair health.

6. Aftercare: keratin and moisture

The hair has been bleached - now it's time to choose the right aftercare. Besides Olaplex, hair needs moisture and keratin after bleaching. Use an intensive moisturiser like Redken's Extreme - Anti-Snap, a leave-in treatment that is incredibly hydrating. Whenever necessary, I recommend a deep conditioning mask like Kérastase's Discipline - Maskeratine. Hair oil should also become your new best friend. After bleaching, treat your hair like expensive porcelain - because it is just as delicate.

7. Less washing less styling

Bleached hair is drier and less likely to become greasy. So get into the habit of washing your hair less often. Every three days is enough. In an emergency, you can treat the greasy areas with dry shampoo. The freshly bleached tips will thank you. Also be careful when styling with heat appliances such as straighteners or curling irons. Make sure you use heat protection and only use heat very rarely. This damages the hair even more.

8. Trim regularly

The tips of bleached hair should be trimmed regularly. Especially if you have just bleached all your hair. Do not try to dye blonde hair and let your hair grow at the same time. Once only the roots need to be recoloured, it's no longer a problem.
