Perfect make-up also includes a beautiful glow. Jennifer Lopez and other stars have been wearing the glow look for years. There are various forms of highlighter and methods for applying them. Here we show you which highlighter is suitable for which look and how to use it.
What is a highlighter?
A highlighter is used to emphasise the highest points of the face and give the skin a fresh and vibrant glow. It is usually a creamy or powdery product. Highlighter is available in various forms, including powders, creams, liquid formulas and sticks. The colour palette ranges from shimmering white and champagne shades to warm gold and pink tones.
Where are the highlighters applied?
- On the cheekbones: To emphasise the cheekbones and give the face more definition.
- In the inner corner of the eye: To make the eyes appear larger and more alert.
- Under the eyebrows: To achieve a lifting effect and better define the brows.
- Above the centre of the lip: To emphasise the natural contour of the upper lip.
- Along the bridge of the nose: To narrow and emphasise the nose.

Types of highlighter
Liquid highlighter
The liquid highlighter is ideal for creating a natural highlight. You can easily apply it to the highest points of the face using your fingers, a beauty blender or a brush. The liquid highlighter is best applied under foundation.
A few drops can also be mixed into the foundation for an all-over glow, which looks particularly beautiful in summer. The shimmering accents also conjure up a beautiful glow on the décolleté.
Stick highlighter / cream highlighter
The stick or cream highlighter is applied over the foundation but under the powder. For an extra strong glow, the cream highlighter can be applied first, followed by a powder highlight.
Powder highlighter
The perfect finishing touch to any make-up is the powder highlighter. Whether pressed powder or loose powder, the complexion gets that Hollywood glow in no time at all. With a very shiny highlighter, it is important to only use a light hand, otherwise the highlight on the face can quickly appear "balky".
Primer with a glow effect
Primers with shimmer are ideal for giving the skin a natural glow. They give an all-over glow and at the same time prepare the skin perfectly for foundation. This method is perfect if you only want to give your skin a slight glow and the extravagant shimmer highlighters are too much for you.
Finishing powder with a glow effect
If your face looks dull or too matt and you don't want to use an intense shimmer highlighter, you can simply use a powder that contains light reflections. This is applied to the entire face and gives the skin a natural radiance without looking too artificial.
Coloured highlighters
There are various highlighters that not only shimmer gold or silver, but some also go slightly blue, purple, pink or even slightly green. It is important to match the highlighter to your eye make-up. Cool colours such as blue and purple go better with cool skin tones. Warm bronze or pink-coloured highlighters are ideal for use on a warm skin tone.
Now you're perfectly prepared to reach for the highlighter! Find the one that suits you best and impress with your radiance!
